Sculpture Space NYC (SSNYC) is an artist-run ceramics center and community hub based in Long Island City, Queens. Since its founding in 2013, SSNYC has dedicated itself to fostering artistic growth by providing affordable studio spaces, specialized equipment, and resources. The center serves as a vital platform for contemporary artists, designers, and educators to expand their investigations into ceramics and sculpture.

Our facility offers 8,500 square feet of individual and shared workspaces, 22’ high ceilings, natural light, clay 3D printer, potters wheels, two slab rollers, two clay extruder, four top loading electric kilns, one 48.5 inch tall front loading Thermal Logic electric kiln, and one 18 cubic ft Gas Kiln.  There is a  glaze chemistry room with a spray booth as well.   

In addition SSNYC provides a range of classes, workshops and one-on-one orientation to help artists and designers to develop prototypes and realize projects in clay. SSNYC also offers firing service ranging from cone 018 to cone 6 oxidation and cone 10 reduction.

We are located in Long Island City, a few stops from Manhattan. Take the 7 train to 33rd Street - Rawson. SSNYC is about a 5 minute walk from the train. Head South on 33rd Street towards Queens Blvd. Turn left on 47th Avenue. Turn right 35th Street.

Magda Dejose

Magda Dejose, American artist (born in Brazil) living and working in New York City. As a sculptor and printmaker, she has worked collaboratively and individually on a variety of interdisciplinary projects. Magda has shown her art work in Japan, Brazil, USA, Canada, Mexico, Portugal, and China.

    Graham Marks

    Projects Coordinator

    Graham Marks has a long and accomplished history with clay, beginning in 1968. He was particularly known and admired for his large coil built earthenware forms, which were exhibited and collected internationally. In addition to his work as an artist, Graham’s career as a teacher is very well established. He has taught at Kansas State University, Rochester Institute of Technology, and was the head of the ceramics/artist in residence program at the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art. Following his tenure at Cranbrook, Graham’s career took a turn and he began studying acupuncture with the great English practitioner J.R. Worsley. Graham went beyond his commitment as a student and became a practicing acupuncturist for twenty-five years. He recently made the decision to return to working in clay, making wheel-thrown functional pots. His discipline and accomplishments as a ceramicist, as well as his experience working in the healing arts, brings a particular sensitivity, creative sensibility, and contribution to the SSNYC team.

    Rosemerry Perez

    Operations Manager

    Rosemerry is an accomplished ceramicist and an invaluable part of the SSNYC team. Rosemerry first started working with clay in 2004 as an apprentice at Bodanna, a non-profit organization in New York. After her first year she was awarded the "Analdo Duran" prize, which led to her studies at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. During her time at Penland, she worked closely with Ron Meyers and Chuck Hinds. In addition to her work as a ceramicist, she became part of the production team at Bodanna and has had work exhibited at the Japan Society. Rosemerry has taught mixed-level classes in ceramics. She is currently working toward her BFA in ceramics at Lehman College. Rosemerry plays an integral role at SSNYC, where she oversees the operation, upkeep, and maintenance of the studio.

    Lou Kirchner

    Operations Manager

    Lou Kirchner has been with Sculpture Space NYC since 2015. While he has assisted with many aspects of the building and maintaining of the studio, he is also an accomplished ceramic artist. Lou has a long and committed relationship to the visual arts. He has a background in painting and sculpture, having received his MFA from Yale University in 1983, along with a full scholarship from the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, in 1979. Additionally, Lou was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1986. Ceramics became the focus of his creative work beginning around 2007. He experimented with different approaches and styles, currently designing lamp structures incorporating ceramic, concrete, and other mixed media. As a member of the SSNYC team, Lou oversees a multitude of responsibilities at the studio, including the chemistry lab, raw material inventory, maintaining essential equipment, and studio management. Lou’s knowledge in all these areas (all informed by his many years of creating art, making sculpture, and ceramics) make him particularly suited in his position as Operations Manager.
