Center for Ceramic Arts

Founded in 2013, Sculpture Space NYC is a Ceramics Center and artist-run organization in Long Island City, Queens. Focused on cultivating creativity, new ideas, and collaboration in ceramics-based investigations, SSNYC acts a resource center for artists, designers, craftspeople, and educators of diverse backgrounds to develop their work and grow artistically.

In 2015, SSNYC started a curatorial program dedicated to contemporary visual art through exhibitions of three-dimensional work with an emphasis on ceramics.

Now known as the SSNYC - Center for Ceramic Arts, the organization achieved independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2022, expanding its dedication to clay artists through curatorial initiatives, educational programming, and artist residencies

Mission

SSNYC Art gallery displaying colorful, abstract ceramic sculptures and candelabras on white tables and walls in a minimalist, modern space.

Our mission is to help artists develop their professional careers by offering solo and group exhibitions. Representing a wide range of ceramic possibilities, six shows are mounted yearly in a 650 square foot, well-lit exhibition space. Adjacent to the gallery space exist the main heart of SSNYC — the studio space where artists work, bridging the gap between community and ceramics.

  • Magda Dejose

    Founder/ Creative Director

    Magda Dejose, American artist (born in Brazil) living and working in New York City. As a sculptor and printmaker, she has worked collaboratively and individually on a variety of interdisciplinary projects. Magda has shown her art work in Japan, Brazil, USA, Canada, Mexico, Portugal, and China

  • Andrew Kennedy

    Founder/ Educational Program Director

    Kennedy came to New York to study fine art at the Cooper Union. He later attended the Skowhegan Art Residency and worked as a sculpture fabricator for artist Richard Artschwager. Kennedy’s ceramics are inspired by an appreciation for large scale utilitarian forms. Andrew's work is represented by RALPH PUCCI INTERNATIONAL in New York City

  • Graham Marks

    Founder/ Curatorial Program Director

    Graham Marks has a long and accomplished history with clay, beginning in 1968. He was particularly known and admired for his large coil built earthenware forms, which were exhibited and collected internationally. In addition to his work as an artist, Graham’s career as a teacher is very well established. He has taught at Kansas State University, Rochester Institute of Technology, and was the head of the ceramics/artist in residence program at the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art. Following his tenure at Cranbrook, Graham’s career took a turn and he began studying acupuncture with the great English practitioner J.R. Worsley. Graham went beyond his commitment as a student and became a practicing acupuncturist for twenty-five years. He recently made the decision to return to working in clay, making wheel-thrown functional pots. His discipline and accomplishments as a ceramicist, as well as his experience working in the healing arts, brings a particular sensitivity, creative sensibility, and contribution to the SSNYC team.
